The life changng Equation of inspired risk taking
When I worked in collegiate athletics, one of my favorite sayings was, “It’s better to beg forgiveness than to ask permission.”
In my role as a marketing director, I was constantly pushing the envelope to try new, outside-of-the-box ideas to entertain our fans.
In our weekly events management meetings, there would always be a collective sigh when I would sweetly say, “So…we have this idea…”
They never knew what I was going to throw out there next.
From fans throwing numbered foam hockey pucks in to moving vehicles on ice to sky divers splitting the goal posts to deliver the game ball before a football game to our legendary student section Harlem Shake viral video, we knew how to go bigger every season.
Because the opportunity to create more engaging options for our sponsors and a more thrilling experience for our fans, most especially the student section, was everything to me.
Pushing past the comfort zones of my team, our head coaches and our operations team was part of my job description.
Because you and I both know that nothing thrilling (or YouTube-worthy) has ever happened as a result of playing small.

The same goes for creating programs and offerings in your business.
That next program, that next webinar…it’s all about pushing yourself to go bigger than ever before...to get even CLOSER to the reason why you're doing it in the first place.
And the truth is, there’s no guarantee you won’t bomb sometimes.
I have certainly had my fair share…from national anthem singers’ microphones not working (it even happened to me when I was singing the Canadian anthem at a hockey game one night, talk about karma) to promotions running too long and having the team run on the field in the middle of them to drunken contestants running all over the ice (and trying to hug me in front of 7,000 people).
But...I survived.
And I learned a hell of a lot from each and every one of those experiences.
Note to self: Screen contestants personally before they take to the ice!
I’ve learned these lessons in my career as an entrepreneur too:
Sometimes you don’t reach your goals.
Sometimes your best friend is the only one who signs up for your webinar.
And rest assured, there are and will be times when you ask yourself if all of this is even worth it.
But...
Then you go ahead blow your goals out of the water.
Or a client shares a story with you about how she pinned YOU up on her vision board because she believes in you so very much.
Or 3 mamas quit their corporate jobs and launch their own businesses this fall. This decision single-handedly changes the course of their families' lives...and the first person they want to thank for inspiring them to make the leap is you.
If you refuse to take the risk in the first place, if you play small and scared, you’ll never know how big of an impact you can really make.
You'll never become that world-changer, movement starter, YouTube sensation you’ve been dreaming about and you'll most definitely never hit Oprah’s couch or those big stages you’ve been thinking about for as long as you can remember.
Rolling the dice to create your intended outcome will always be more powerful than sitting on the proverbial sideline.
And when we spend all of our time focusing on the “what if?”, we miss out on actually living out the brilliant experience of our lives.
What risk are you ready to take?
